The Workshop

The workshop is addressed to all musicians (instrumentalists and singers) interested in free improvisation, active in any musical field, of any technical, stylistic and idiomatic background, of any age and with any kind of training, preferably with a good level of technical-instrumental mastery.

The course will focus on the practice of free improvisation, mainly in small chamber formations; the participants, following Joëlle Léandre’s guidance, will form extemporaneously small variable-geometry ensembles whose improvisations will be the starting point for a shared reflection.

Among the various points of interest of the course will be improvisation and its relationship with composition, the instrumental techniques and relational dynamics used during improvisation, the form and its ongoing management, and political and philosophical themes. The course is generally organised in study days of six hours of improvisation in small groups divided between morning and afternoon.

In addition to the organised lessons, there will be convivial and informal moments in which to talk about the topics that emerge from the meetings in an atmosphere of sharing and mutual listening.

[…] And we’ll work, play, create music, we’ll talk about life, sounds, jazz, free, noise, poetry, Europe, Usa, painting, politics, forms, structures, and of course composition!! […]

Composition Masterclass

Composition Masterclass

Franck Bedrossian - Masterclass di Composizione
Download the application form

The Masterclass

The composition masterclass is aimed at all composers who wish to present their works (for any ensemble) and who wish to discuss topics ranging from compositional techniques to considerations on contemporary writing with Franck Bedrossian.

During the course days, there will be meetings dedicated to listening to and discussing the pieces presented with the teacher, moments in which the teacher will talk about his own production, concerts, work with the ensemble, and there will also be convivial and informal moments in which to talk about the topics that emerge from the meetings in an atmosphere of mutual sharing and listening.

Individual Lessons

The course days will be organised between individual lessons with Franck Bedrossian, public lectures and work with the ensemble. For the individual lessons, it will be possible to present already written works, working drafts of new pieces and new arrangements of existing pieces. It is strongly advised to provide audio (or audio/video) examples of the extended techniques used in your work.

Working with the ensemble

The contemporary music ensemble Collettivo_21 will be available to work with the students and teacher during the course. Each student will have the opportunity to work with the ensemble on chamber pieces that have already been written, on drafts of new works, or on new arrangements of existing pieces: the aim is to create a free space in which to work, not aimed at a performance of a piece, but focused on the possibilities of experimenting with timbral and instrumental combinations, optimising technical and instrumental issues of writing (also from the point of view of the performer), the relationship between performers and composers, and other relevant issues to be assessed on the spot. It will also be possible, during the work, to record useful sound combinations and/or small sections of the pieces.

The ensemble also offers individual time with each performer during the course, with the opportunity to discuss extended techniques and other relevant issues.

Lectures and Workshops

Lectures and workshops will be given during the course by Franck Bedrossian and the Collettivo_21 ensemble. Lectures will focus on the lecturer’s production, the aesthetics and technical realisation of the amplification of acoustic instruments, the relationship between composers and performers, and other salient topics. The members of the Collettivo_21 ensemble will additionally hold short workshops dedicated to each instrument, in which the main technical writing issues will be addressed, including extended techniques – from the perspective of the performer, and answering questions from the participants.

The ensemble of Collettivo_21 available for the masterclass is:

  • flute (also piccolo and alto flute)
  • saxophone (tenor, alto)
  • violin
  • cello
  • piano (please contact in advance for piano preparation)
  • classical guitar and electric guitar (for chamber work only – please contact for effects/instrumentation)
  • percussion (please contact for a list of available instruments)
  • electronics (tape/fixed media only – please contact for a list of available instruments)

In addition, the ensemble will present a monographic concert with music by Franck Bedrossian on the first day of the course.

Franck Bedrossian

The music of Franck Bedrossian, beyond its immediate physical impact, deploys dramatic intensity with force and refinement. The inventiveness of his sound and the expressive density of his writing sculpt a musical form that is rich with ambiguities and acoustic illusions.

After studying composing, orchestration, and analysis at the CNR de Paris, Bedrossian studied composition with Allain Gaussin before entering the CNSMDP, where he studied with Gérard Grisey and then with Marco Stroppa. In 2001-2002, he participated in Cursus (the IRCAM’s composition and computer music course), studying with Philippe Leroux, Tristan Murail, and Philippe Manoury. In parallel, he completed his training with Helmut Lachenmann at the Centre Acanthes in 1999, and at the Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie in 2004.

Franck Bedrossian

His music has been performed at numerous festivals, including Manca (France), Musica Nova (Finland), Festival Internacional Cervantino (Mexico), RTÉ Living Music Festival (Ireland), Présences (France), Musica (France), Borealis Festival (Norway), Ars Musica (Belgium), Wittener Tage für Neue Musik (Germany), Nuova Consonanza, Suona Francese (Italy), Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo, Festival international d’art lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence (France), Fabbrica Europa (Italy), Wien Modern (Austria), Archipel (Switzerland), Donaueschinger Musiktage, MaerzMusik, Sommer in Stuttgart, Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, NOW!, ECLAT, Ultraschall (Germany), ReMusik (Russia), Venice Biennale (Italy), and ManiFeste (France).

In 2001, he received a fellowship from the Fondation Meyer and from the Fondation Bleustein-Blanchet pour la Vocation; in 2004 he was awarded the SACEM’s Prix Hervé Dugardin. The Institut de France (Académie des Beaux-Arts) awarded him the Pierre Cardin Award for Music Composition in 2005. He also won the SACEM young composers award in 2007. In 2012, he was awarded the SWR prize for orchestral work at the Donaueschinger Musiktage for his composition Itself. He completed a residency at the Villa Médicis from 2006-2008, and was named Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2011. He taught composition at the University of California, Berkeley from 2008-2019, and in 2020 began teaching at the Kunstuniversität Graz.

His work is published by Éditions Billaudot, Verlag Neue Musik, and Maison ONA.

Duo Kupinski

The Kupinski Guitar Duo is the peerless example of artistic talent in the world of classical music and one of Europe’s most renowned guitar duos. Acclaimed by both the public and critics alike as two musicians with a brilliant technique, passion, quality of sound and infinite elegance.

In addition to the numerous solo achievements, after graduating the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice /Poland/ and Hochschule für Musik in Weimar (guitar class of prof. Thomas Müller-Pering), Ewa Jablczynska and Dariusz Kupinski decided to establish the guitar duo, bringing to their performances a masterful sense of ensemble and charming personal chemistry.

They have been honoured multiple times with prestigious awards and scholarships for artistic achievements. They have played recitals in Europe (e.g. Poland, England, Germany, France, Switzerland), USA, Mexico, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan.

Kupinski Duo

As a part of their passion for education, they have been invited to give Master Classes in Europe, Asia and USA. Ewa holds the Habilitation degree in guitar performance and is tenured professor at the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow. Dariusz holds the Doctor degree in guitar performance and teaches at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. In 2011 their debut CD „SPANISH MUSIC” has been released. From that time this husband and wife duo has been gaining momentum and attracting fans throughout the World. Next CD „RECITAL”/2016/ features mostly arrangements of music of Chopin, Rossini, Piazzolla and Gershwin. The intention of the latest CD ‘Kupinski Guitar Duo Goes Modern’ /2022/ was to record new, unknown, original pieces for guitar duo.

With a growing reputation for performing with tremendous energy and artistry, their aim is to create a rich and varied concert experience for audience through great performances of great music.

The Kupinski Guitar Duo plays exclusively D’Addario strings on guitars made by Philip Woodfield.

Composition Masterclass

Masterclass di Composizione Maresz Verrando 2025
Download the application form

The masterclass

The composition masterclass is aimed at all composers who wish to present their works (for any instrument) and who wish to discuss topics ranging from compositional techniques to reflections on contemporary writing with Yan Maresz and Giovanni Verrando.

During the course days there will be meetings dedicated to listening to and discussing the pieces presented with both professors, moments in which the professors will talk about their own production, concerts, and work with the ensemble, as well as convivial and informal moments in which to discuss the topics that emerge from the meetings in an atmosphere of mutual sharing and listening.

Ensemble in Residence: Collettivo_21

The contemporary music ensemble Collettivo_21 will be available to work with students and professors during the course. Each student will have the opportunity to work with the ensemble in one or both of the following ways:

  • Laboratory work on chamber pieces: work on pieces that have already been written or on drafts of new works: the idea is to create a free space in which to work, not aimed at a performance of a piece, but focused on the possibilities of experimenting with timbral and instrumental combinations, optimising technical and instrumental issues of writing (from the performer’s point of view), the relationship between performers and composers, and other relevant issues to be assessed on the spot.
  • Work on a new work/miniature for solo instrument (or solo+fixed media), lasting up to 3 minutes, which will be worked on with the selected ensemble member and will be the subject of a public performance and live recording.

The ensemble will also organise shared moments in which to discuss writing for instruments, the relationship between performers and composers and topics of interest to the students.

The ensemble available for the masterclass (both chamber and solo works) is:

  • flute (also piccolo and alto flute)
  • saxophone (tenor, alto)

Piano Symposium – VII edition

Piano Performance Workshop

Piano Symposium - Alberto Chines, Leonardo Pierdomenico
Download the application form

Sharing music, experiences gained during one’s artistic career and considerations about repertoire, piano interpretation, study methodology and the future of the performing arts.

To share a magical space, immersed in the beauty of nature and equipped with all comforts, a brand new piano room equipped for professional sound recordings, spacious rooms with a view and even a SPA.

This will be the philosophy behind Piano Symposium, a three-day workshop reserved for a small group of pianists: an opportunity to work closely with two young and established artists, winners of international prizes and authors of prestigious recordings, but above all enthusiastic about sharing what they have learned (and continue to learn) through in-depth study with outstanding teachers and a concert activity in full swing.

The course is open to pianists of all ages and repertoire predilections. The pieces indicated at the time of enrolment will be studied individually, observing the technical, stylistic and interpretative aspects. There are no maximum limits on the amount of repertoire to be proposed: it will be agreed with the teachers on which pieces to focus particular attention; the minimum limit is fifteen to twenty minutes of music.

Alberto Chines

A solid musical education and the confluence of many different teaching and professional experiences have contributed to making Alberto Chines a lively and multifaceted artist.
